As we have discussed in the previous blog that Philosophy is a multifaceted discipline wand it encompasses various branches within it depending upon the direction where it is heading towards. Wherever the direction is, it is dedicated to answer the basic questions about the nature of reality, knowledge, logic, existence, values, logic and beauty.
In this section we are going to delve into some basic branches of Philosophy to gain the deeper understanding. Each branch of Philosophy serves as a distinct avenue of knowledge and inquiry within the main field of Philosophy and each has its own unique perspective and methods to gain insights. Exploring the different branches of Philosophy makes us understand the effect of Philosophy of human intellect throughout the history.
Given below is the detail of some basic branches of Philosophy.
Ontology
A major branch of Philosophy and central branch of Metaphysics, Ontology deals with the profound questions related to nature of existence and reality.
However, at times, Ontology and Metaphysics function interchangeably. It constructs a framework to elucidate the fundamental aspects of being and existence, involving various categories that constitute the world.
When dissected to its core, Ontology addresses questions about what truly exists and the relationships among different entities (Smith, 1998). More specifically, it encompasses the following questions:
What exists and what doesn’t?
Exploring the nature and characteristics of being and existence.
Uncovering the various categories of existence.
How different entities are interrelated?
What is the nature and reality of truth we know?
How mind and reality are related to each other?
How actual and possible are different from each other?
It moves to the direction of uncovering the important characteristics that enlist the various kinds of being, and the structure that is the base of reality. For example in the modern Philosophy, Ontology revolves around the questions of abstract reality like numbers, nature of material objects around us, or essence of abstract qualities such as different colors (van Inwagen, 2017). Logical analysis and conceptual clarity are used to delineate the vague boundaries between different categories of existence and to explore the relationship between them. Not only in Philosophy, Ontology plays an important role in other fields too including the information science, where it serves to classify and organize data. Ontologists in computer sciences and artificial intelligence serve to represent knowledge and catalyze the communication between different computers and humans. In a nutshell, Ontology can be regarded as a foundational discipline of the Philosophy, and has various application in different domains. Through Ontology we get enabled to explore the nature of existence in this universe, categorization of different entities, understanding the fundamental structures of reality and contribute to the deeper understanding of this universe.
The important thing to understand here is difference between Metaphysics and Ontology as their boundary is very blur. Metaphysics, a broader branch of Philosophy, addresses questions about the nature of reality and extends to areas like Philosophy of mind, Philosophy of language, Philosophy of science, and more. In contrast, Ontology, a narrower branch compared to Metaphysics, focuses on answering questions related to reality, existence, and categories of entities.
Epistemology
The simplest definition of Epistemology is “Study of Knowledge”. It includes the examination of nature, reality, origin, scope and limits of human knowledge. In epistemology we try to unfold that how do humans acquire knowledge and how it is justified and evaluated. It can be said that it is a foundational field of study which delves into process of reasoning, belief formation and the pursuit of truth.
It addresses the following questions:
What is knowledge? The beginning of Epistemology is through this question that what is knowledge. It portrays the questions like what its like to know something?
How do we acquire knowledge? Here we investigate and explore different ways and methods through which we learn the knowledge.
Various areas are included in this such as examining perception, memorization, the skill of reasoning, testimony and instinct. These are the different potential avenues of the knowledge.
What is the nature of belief of human beings? Belief is regarded as most important fundamental component of human knowledge. In Epistemology we explore the circumstances under which belief can be justified logically and can be rationalized. Here we address the issues like how belief is formed, justified and revised.
What are the limits / boundaries of human knowledge? Epistemology deals with finding the boundaries and limit of human knowledge. Here it is addressed that what is the potential limits of knowledge, and to which extent something is known and what is the knowledge beyond the human capacities.
What is the nature of justification of knowledge and truth?
How evidence and reasoning plays a role in knowledge evidence?
Epistemology plays a vital role in education as it helps in curriculum making, teaching methods, Assessment and Evaluation, Critical thinking, diversity in knowledge, ethical reasoning, pedagogical research, interdisciplinary learning and meta cognition.
Axiology
In simple terms Axiology means study of values in a human society. It encompass all the questions related to the values, ethics, aesthetics and nature of what is good and what is bad. Moreover, it can be seen as a discipline committed to evaluating societal concepts of right and wrong, exploring notions of beauty and ugliness, and delving into other aspects related to the judgment of values in society.
Here are some of the questions which are addressed in Axiology.
What is considered as a value? Axiology initiates by questioning what is deemed a value, evaluating its goodness or badness, encompassing both moral and aesthetic values.
What is the nature of ethics in society? Ethics is the sub field of Axiology and it digs out questions about right and wrong, good and bad and principles that shape the good and bad behavior of human beings (Shafer-Landau, 2015).
What is included in beauty or what exactly the beauty is? A branch of Axiology, Aesthetic explores the concerns related to the nature of beauty. It answers the questions that what makes a thing beautiful or ugly and what is actual criteria of being aesthetic and artistic.
What is considered as value in Education? Axiology plays a vital role in Education as it encompasses the issues which are related to moral and values based education and the practices that should guide the education.
How society gets influenced by the cultural values? In Axiology we examine the effect of values and tradition on society and individual either in positive and negative way.
Logic
The branch of Philosophy which deals with study of argumentation and reasoning is Logic. It explores the concept of argumentation and structure of valid reasoning. Having a very important and basic role in philosophy and critical thinking, it answers the questions which are related to the fundamentals of reasoning and debates.
Here are some questions addressed by the logic.
What is considered as a valid reasoning? Logic examines that what is the criteria of valid reasoning, rules and regulations which make any argument sound or not.
What is structural framework of an argument? Logic uncovers the components which make an argument and it included premises and conclusions both.
What makes an inductive reasoning? Logic addresses inductive reasoning which is reaching to a conclusion through some evidences.
What makes a deductive reasoning?
Moreover, logic includes deductive reasoning, transitioning from a general premise to a specific conclusion.
